A Formal Garden Vision Takes Shape

Most people bring knick knacks or t-shirts home from vacation. Debe and Lou Terhar brought home a garden.

Of course they didn’t stuff plants, pathways and a fountain into their suitcases, but they were so enchanted with a formal English garden they saw while vacationing in Australia, they vowed to recreate it in their Cincinnati backyard.

From Down Under to the West Side

Inspiration hit while the Terhars were staying at Lillianfels Resort and Spa in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales, Australia. “It was listed as one of the thousand places to see before you die,” Debe says. “When we were walking from the resort down to the restaurant, there was this English garden on the grounds of the restaurant. I was so taken by it.”

Debe lived in England for several years, and a formal garden like those she’d seen there and throughout Europe had always been a dream.

Lou began pacing off the size of the Lillianfels garden, back to front and side to side. From his rough measurement, it seemed like they could make it work behind their house on Cincinnati’s West Side.

Dream to Reality

When they returned home, Debe pulled out the email address she had used to make reservations for the restaurant, crossed her fingers and sent a request for more information on the garden. “I got an email from the chief engineer of Lillianfels, with answers to all my questions, plus the design for the original garden,” Debe recalls.

The Terhars took the information to local landscape designer Martha Wasserman to adapt the plans for their space. Then they contacted Seiler’s Landscaping to begin construction.

MVIMG_20191024_140655.jpg

“When I met Will Seiler, I thought it was a perfect fit,” Debe says. She knew he understood the vision she had for the garden. “Everyone with Seiler’s has just been phenomenal,” she says.

As the garden is taking shape, Debe is getting more and more excited. She can’t wait to see the Korean lilacs, white hydrangea and coral bells blooming. “We originally wanted to have white climbing roses over the trellises, but it seemed more practical to have clematis.”

Until that first blooming season, Debe is enjoying walking the garden paths and relishing their elegant and unique souvenir from a trip across the world.

Top Evergreens for Cincinnati

snowflake-1823942_1280.jpg

We all love seeing sparkling Christmas trees in homes at this time of year—but evergreens are a welcome sight outdoors, too. Our top evergreens for Cincinnati can provide shade, protection from wind and privacy in your landscape.

In bleak Ohio winters, the green of these trees stands out and they provide food and shelter for birds and wildlife. What’s not to like?

Norway Spruce

The gorgeous Norway spruce is a Seiler’s Landscaping favorite. It can grow to 50 or 60 feet tall, making it perfect for use as a screen or windbreak in a large landscape. When we plant these trees, we make sure they have plenty of space: A full-grown Norway spruce can measure 25 feet in diameter. Here are some of Norway spruce’s advantages:

  • Long cylindrical cones

  • Drought tolerance, which is a selling point in the Cincinnati area

  • Cold hardiness and adaptability to a range of soils

  • Disease resistance

  • Dense branches that offer privacy, especially when planted in rows

Spring Grove Arborvitae

Another one of our top evergreens for Cincinnati is this species of arborvitae. If you have deer, this tree could be the solution. Fast-growing and coldhardy, the Spring Grove arborvitae is unappealing to hungry deer.

If you’re looking for privacy, this species can quickly create a living screen in your yard. With this tree, you get:

  • Superior dark green glossy color

  • Winter hardiness (it easily survives sub-zero temperatures)

  • 20- to 30-foot height

  • Thick foliage on a tight, pyramid shape

Emerald Green Arborvitae

This sun-loving specimen grows tall, but not big. Use this narrow tree in borders, containers, hedges and even small gardens. Fancy something a bit more fanciful? Trim this arborvitae into whimsical topiary shapes.

When you choose this cultivar for your landscaping, you’ll be rewarded with:

  • A tall, narrow shape

  • Dense, dark green winter foliage

  • Capacity to thrive in Cincinnati’s heat and humidity

  • Drought tolerance

  • Ability to create a privacy screen

  • Suitability for topiary shaping

Pro Spotlight: Unilock Leads in Hardscaping

Every landscape plan has two parts: plant life and hardscaping. Hardscaping includes paver patios, sidewalks, pool decks and walls. At Seiler’s, we depend on one of our partners, Unilock, to supply us with the literal building blocks of great hardscaping.

We asked David Roscoe of Unilock to talk about hardscaping.

What are the latest trends in hardscaping and outdoor living?

David Roscoe: The industry seems to be trending towards a more contemporary range of products. Most recently we have developed our U-Cara Wall.

The U-Cara wall system offers both smooth and textured vertical wall blocks. How can they be used?

David Roscoe: U-Cara has endless design possibilities and it has our Enduracolor finish, which prevents fading over time. It can be used for retaining walls, seat walls, fire features, grills and more. Year after year, we have led the hardscape industry in innovation.

What makes Unilock unique?

David Roscoe: Our founder Ed Bryant was the first to manufacture concrete pavers in North America in 1972. We are still a privately owned company by the Bryant family. We are extremely focused on producing a high-quality product that will last for years. We even provide a lifetime transferable warranty on all our pavers and walls.

How long have you been in this industry?

David Roscoe: Landscaping and hardscaping have always been a passion of mine because I love the creative aspect, plus I enjoy working outdoors! I graduated from Eastern Kentucky University in 2002 with a bachelor’s degree in ornamental horticulture. I spent 14 years designing and selling residential landscape projects. Then I started my career with Unilock in 2016. It’s been an excellent opportunity to focus I my favorite part of landscape: the hardscape!

We love Unilock products. Hopefully the feeling is mutual!

David Roscoe: I like working with Will and the team at Seiler’s Landscaping because they are a very creative and professional company; which pairs perfectly with Unilock.

New Home Landscaping Makes Space for Family Fun

Creating room for family fun was the goal for Amy Lang and Eric Hessell’s outdoor living spaces and new home landscaping. An unexpected bonus helped them do just that.

_S5A1863.JPG

When Amy and Eric were looking for a building lot in the Long Cove community of Mason, they were excited to find one that backed up to ball fields. They knew the fields, which sit on top of a ridge behind their home site, wouldn’t be developed so their backyard would have privacy.

_S5A1887.JPG

As they designed their custom home, they called on us for a master plan for the landscaping. The plan called for a series of retaining walls to push the slope behind the house back. With that move, their future backyard was flatter and larger than they expected, allowing visions of a pool to pop into their heads.

_S5A3266.JPG

Outdoor Living Amenities

The new home landscaping plan also called for a paver patio, built-in firepit and a hot tub. “We wanted space for everyone to come over,” Eric explains. Amy, Eric and their three children often host large gatherings of their extended family. Plenty of outdoor amenities keep the whole crowd happy.

New England in the Midwest

The family’s home, built by Hensley Custom Building Group, features a New England coastal style. To make the landscape complement the home, we spent time researching classic New England style. While some plants popular in the Northeast don’t do well in our region, we were able to choose cultivars that give the home that authentic coastal feel.

The front yard carries the coastal theme and creates a striking first impression.

Pro Spotlight: Neal's Remodeling for Your Home and Garden

Landscaping a newly remodeled home or adding custom-built structures to our clients’ landscaping is exciting. And, it has allowed us to partner with outstanding local companies like Neal’s Design Remodel.

We asked Mike Hendy of Neal’s about today’s remodeling trends.

Photo courtesy of Neal’s Design Remodel

What’s new in design and remodeling?

Mike Hendy: For outdoor living, the biggest trend we are seeing is “outdoor family room” type spaces. Many of our projects have large stone fireplaces with TVs and comfy seating. Families want multiple locations outside for different types of entertaining. Destination firepits, pool houses, outdoor bars or family room seating around a fireplace are the most common.

For interior spaces, we are seeing a lot of natural wood and simple clean designs. Our best advice on trends is to design what you like. It is very common for us to put a custom spin on our designs that are unique to the homeowner’s lifestyle.

What makes Neal’s Design Remodel different?

Mike Hendy: We are a design-build firm which makes us unique in our ability to tackle all aspects of a project from start to finish. Our mission is to provide exceptional design producing the finest home remodeling experience while building outstanding relationships with our clients.

How does that approach influence the way you work?

Mike Hendy: Once we begin a project we are camping out together in the homeowners’ “sacred space” and it is our job to make sure this is as enjoyable and painless as possible. Detailed schedules, daily clean ups and constant communication are extremely important.

We work every day to make sure our clients have an amazing remodeling experience.

Do you have advice about integrating landscaping with a remodeling project?

Mike Hendy: Landscaping on the exterior (as with painting on the interior) can make or break a project. Picking the right landscape design can really finish off a project, or if done incorrectly or insufficiently, can detract from the overall aesthetics.

As with any of our exterior projects, it is paramount to have a great plan while discussing all of the details, and how they interact with each other prior to beginning the construction process.  Neal’s operates as the quarterback of the project to make sure that all items of the project are completed in the right sequence, on time and on budget.

What do you enjoy most about your work and partnering with Seiler’s Landscaping?

Mike Hendy: My grandfather started Neal’s in 1972, and I have worked within the business since high school. Remodeling presents different challenges on every single project. It is very fulfilling to work with clients and transform their home into what they have always envisioned.  Often times our clients have been thinking about their remodeling projects for many years prior to reaching out to us.

We have worked with Seiler’s for years. Will Seiler is punctual, communicates well, and has great foresight into possible issues that can arise during a project. Seiler’s landscaping and construction knowledge makes them a great partner on any outdoor living project.

An English Garden Landscape Renovation in Cincinnati

On vacation in Australia, our clients fell in love with a reproduction English garden on the grounds of a bed and breakfast they visited. They could imagine the formal garden re-created at their home back in Ohio.

Fortunately, they were able to reach the garden’s architect and secure the original plans. Then they reached out to us at Seiler’s Landscaping to bring a bit of English charm to their Westside home. We, of course, jumped at the opportunity to work on such a distinctive project.

Landscape Renovation with an English Accent

Following the original design down to the inch, we planned walls, garden paths, steps and pergolas for the garden’s structure. The plants we choose will match the original as closely as possible, keeping our Cincinnati climate in mind.

The garden project in progress, with boxwood hedges planted.

A focal point of the original 6,600-square-foot garden is a three-tier fountain. Renaissance Garden Ornament, located in Oakley reproduced that fountain for our clients’ new garden.  Here are some photos of the landscape renovation taking shape:

Landscaping a Home with a View: Before and After Manhattan Harbor

A sweeping view of the Ohio River makes this Dayton, Kentucky, home one of a kind. The owners wanted to create a park-like setting to match the beautiful views.

_S5A0642.JPG

The owners purchased an empty lot next to their home and envisioned a place to soak up the views and entertain. One caveat: They wanted plantings to provide privacy for the outdoor living areas while still keeping the sightlines down the river to Mt. Adams and the city skyline.

How-to-landscape-a-garage.JPG

Our design called for a landscaped pool and spa, a firepit area and curved paver walkways to connect them. To maintain the view down the river, we installed a strategically placed patio near the river and bordered it with low-growing plants. Accented with a bubbler fountain and a stone bench, this sun-drenched spot is the perfect place to relax and watch boats and barges pass by.

Riverfront-landscaping-with-patio.JPG

We designed a curving paver walkway leading from a firepit overlooking the river to the home’s pool and spa area.

riverfont-landscaping-firepit-walkway.JPG

The pool deck is stamped concrete and is defined with a low stone wall. Privacy plantings along one side shield the pool from view from the road.

Riverfront-landscaping-pool-with-a-view.JPG
_S5A0665.JPG

When landscaping a home with a view, you want to avoid obstructing windows. We chose low plantings that add color and texture but will not grow too tall.

Overall landscaping with path and pool.JPG

For curb appeal on the street side of the home, we chose trees and shrubs for color in a curved planting bed. Strategically placed landscape boulders echo the stone accents on the home.

Curb appeal landscaping.JPG

In landscaping a home with a view, the big picture is important, but so are the small details. We included a  bubbler fountain to offer the soft sound of trickling water and chose a mix of shrubs for interesting color combinations.

Start to Finish

At Seiler’s, we enjoy digging in to large projects like landscaping homes with a view. It was our pleasure to transform this blank slate yard into outdoor living spaces that make the most of the location and welcome friends and family.

We started the design for this Cincinnati pool with a blank slate. The owners had a lovely lot, but wanted to make the most of it with a pool for friends and family to enjoy.

During construction, the pool site was excavated, then the concrete was poured and decking installed. The pool’s design included an accent stone wall with waterfall, a shallow walk-in area with bubbler fountain and a built-in seat..

With the pool complete, Seiler’s Landscaping crew finished it off with exterior lighting, grass turf and planting beds designed to provide color and privacy.

Pro Spotlight: Haven Home Lighting

When the sun goes down, you can count on outdoor lighting to play up the best features of your home and landscaping. As one of Cincinnati’s top landscaping firms, we are proud to share more about the partners we work with here locally.

Recently, we’ve partnered with Haven Home Lighting, a Northern Kentucky company that’s making a colorful splash. We talked with Chris McCoy, founder of Haven Home Lighting, about what’s new now.

IMG_1699.jpg

What do homeowners want from outdoor lighting?

Chris McCoy: Customers are buying the experience and ambiance. It is important that they enjoy the space for many years to come. Lighting plays a big role. Our systems can light pathways, decks, pools and outdoor living spaces.

How is Haven Home Lighting different?

Chris McCoy: When shopping for our own home lighting several years ago, we noticed the lack of options offering easy-to-use functionality and brilliant colors. Instead of simply settling for what was available, we decided to design our own premium lighting products. We offer durable brass and aluminum fixtures with classic LED white lighting or full color.

You can manage your Haven Home Lighting right from your phone with our simple, user-friendly app. We have the most versatile landscape lighting on the market.

With your lighting system, homeowners have options in terms of color. How is that used?

Chris McCoy: We offer a wide range of colors, and through our app, you will also be able to set up calendar-based scheduling. You can program your house to light up red and green from December 1st through December 31st, and it will automatically switch to that set-up in December, not only this year, but every year going forward. If you love Halloween, you can use the app to schedule orange and purple lighting on October 31st. You can even change to your favorite team’s colors on game night.

You can make changes from anywhere and there’s no need for timers on the fixtures.

Home with orange and purple Halloween theme lighting

Your business model is a bit different, too, right?

Chris McCoy: We work directly with our install partners, instead of going through distribution, so that we support both our partner and their customer in the best way possible. We design, engineer, assemble and test all of our products in Northern Kentucky.

We look for partners, like Seiler’s Landscaping, that care about their clients’ experience as much as we do after the job is done and they are off the job site. It is important for our company to partner with companies that have the same culture of support and client care as we do.

Cloud-based systems, advances in LEDs and phone technology position us to be a perfect solution for partners with customers excited about phone control and home automation.

Outdoor lighting has so many benefits: How would someone add Haven Home Lighting to their home?

Chris McCoy: Homeowners can talk with a partner like Seiler’s Landscaping to help design an outdoor lighting system. They can also find more information on our website at www.havenhomelighting.com.

7 Tried and True Ways to Add Amazing Curb Appeal: Plus One You Could Do Today

Curb appeal is something we know a lot about at Seiler’s Landscaping. Though the term is used by real estate professionals to talk about how prospective buyers view a home, we find most people want a yard that they themselves think is beautiful. People love coming home at night to a yard that makes them smile. Here are some ways you can add lasting curb appeal:

1. Invest in a front walkway that wows.

IMG_5535.jpg

Whoever said a straight line was the best way to get from point A to point B was dead wrong. A curved walkway to the front door delights the eye and welcomes visitors like a wave. Hardscaping your walk with pavers, flagstone or slate provides a way to add year-round texture and color to your look. Starting with a new walkway is also a great first project to dip your toe into working with our Cincinnati landscaping firm.

2. Design retaining walls.

Decorative retaining walls provide a structure around which to build your landscape design. From stacked stone to pavers or even boulders, a series of retaining walls make a front yard pop.

IMG_5820.jpg

3. Plant beds for color and year-round interest.

A variety of evergreens in varying shades of green should form the backbone of your front yard beds. Add texture to your beds with various shapes of foliage and height of plants to make your beds visually appealing. From boxwoods to viburnums, we start with the workhorse plants for our Cincinnati climate. And who does not love the pop of glowing color provided by Gold Mop Threadleaf Cypress? Apparently, no one in Cincinnati. From there we love to add dependable shrubs that provide color in different seasons such as burning bush and weigela.

4. Create spaces for annual color.

In Cincinnati, we love our mums in the fall. By designing your beds with dedicated areas for swapping out annuals, we provide a manageable way to add that color you crave. The right time to swap out your color to the next season is when your plants start to look too tall or thin. Another hint: It’s time to make a fall switch when you feel jealous of your neighbors’ mums or see them sprouting up in the garden centers.

5. Arrange plants for height and texture.

Front stoops and steps are great places to add pots for annuals. Then you can match the beds in the annuals in the pots and add some height. The old saying goes that you plant your pots with, “thrillers, fillers and spillers.” This means you want a “thriller” plant like a grass or evergreen to provide height. The “filler” should probably match your annuals. The “spiller” is a plant that trails like a sweet potato vine for example.

potted flowers-2688083_1920.jpg

6. Install window boxes because you only live once.

Window boxes provide a way to add seasonal color at eye level and can even be decorated for the holidays with evergreens. They can be custom built or purchased off the shelf. We recommend adding an irrigating system to take the headache out of watering them.

7. Light your walkways and house.

Nothing adds drama and pizzazz like a well-lit path and home. When you are redoing your beds for curb appeal, it’s a great time to put in landscape lighting for night interest. See our article on landscape lighting techniques for more information.

Do-it-today idea: Replace your house numbers.

Can’t remember when you put those house numbers up? Well, maybe that is a sign that you could change them out. Today, hardware stores offer a huge variety of shapes, colors and styles to add interest. Get ideas of what you like from Pinterest and then hit the store.
