Landscaping a Home with a View: Before and After Manhattan Harbor
A sweeping view of the Ohio River makes this Dayton, Kentucky, home one of a kind. The owners wanted to create a park-like setting to match the beautiful views.
The owners purchased an empty lot next to their home and envisioned a place to soak up the views and entertain. One caveat: They wanted plantings to provide privacy for the outdoor living areas while still keeping the sightlines down the river to Mt. Adams and the city skyline.
Our design called for a landscaped pool and spa, a firepit area and curved paver walkways to connect them. To maintain the view down the river, we installed a strategically placed patio near the river and bordered it with low-growing plants. Accented with a bubbler fountain and a stone bench, this sun-drenched spot is the perfect place to relax and watch boats and barges pass by.
We designed a curving paver walkway leading from a firepit overlooking the river to the home’s pool and spa area.
The pool deck is stamped concrete and is defined with a low stone wall. Privacy plantings along one side shield the pool from view from the road.
When landscaping a home with a view, you want to avoid obstructing windows. We chose low plantings that add color and texture but will not grow too tall.
For curb appeal on the street side of the home, we chose trees and shrubs for color in a curved planting bed. Strategically placed landscape boulders echo the stone accents on the home.
In landscaping a home with a view, the big picture is important, but so are the small details. We included a bubbler fountain to offer the soft sound of trickling water and chose a mix of shrubs for interesting color combinations.
Start to Finish
At Seiler’s, we enjoy digging in to large projects like landscaping homes with a view. It was our pleasure to transform this blank slate yard into outdoor living spaces that make the most of the location and welcome friends and family.
Here are the before images of the side yard to help you imagine what’s possible with a little imagination and a good design.
